If it feels like everyone you know is suddenly taking a pottery class, you're not imagining it.

In 2012, San Francisco had only a handful of pottery studios. Today there are at least 25 studios across the city with more in the works. That's not a niche hobby growing slowly, that's a category exploding.

The clay renaissance is driven by a few different things. People rediscovered hands-on hobbies during the pandemic, and a lot of them never stopped. Now there's a second wave of people looking for activities that pull them away from their screens. Clay does that better than almost anything else, as it demands your hands and full attention. You can't doomscroll and throw a bowl at the same time.

San Francisco also has deep roots in ceramics. California became a hub for ceramic art back in the 1950s, when artists moved west to build studios and create large-scale abstract sculpture. The infrastructure and the appetite for the medium never really left, we're just seeing a new generation rediscover it.

Every potter and hobbyist, whether they are working from a studio or out of their garage, needs clay, glaze, and tools.

Enter Disco Clayworks!

We are providing a space for ceramists of all levels to actually touch tools and discover new glazes without having to drive across the bay or give more money to Jeff Bezos. We feel incredibly passionate about building a community and connecting the 25+ studios across the studio through artists talks, demonstrations, and workshops. We're not adding another studio to the count, we are creating a bridge between them.

We're building this one step at a time: finding the right space, finishing the build-out, then getting that first shipment of tools onto our shelves. Follow along as we embark on this journey! We'll be sharing the whole process as we go and we hope that you will join us.
